Seven ways to use Google Trends to increase SEO efficiency

1. Google trends – Create and optimize content for seasonal trends.

Seasonal Trends are some reliable and consistent topics to cover.

It provides a bank of articles that you can write each year.

To take advantage of the increase in searches, some keywords will attract. You can create new content or optimize existing content on these topics when their popularity peaks.

But how do you know precisely when Query popularity will peak. Let’s take a look at the specific example below!

Example: Take a look at Google Trends data for the keyword “umbrella” in the US.

trend google, Search engine results page

Google Trends for the keyword “umbrella” in the US

And the trend is similar in Australia:

trends google, Google Ads

Google Trends for the keyword “umbrella” in Australia

You can see that the query “umbrella” is most popular in the US in June, while in Australia, the peak falls in December. These are the months when the rainy season starts and people realize they don’t want to get wet.

So if your business depends on the season, you can quickly estimate your business’s peaks and troughs by analyzing relevant search queries in Google Trends.

You can then use this data in two ways:

Create relevant content to coincide with peak times

Example: If you live in Australia and sell Umbrella – umbrellas, you should put together a “rainy season preparation guide” and publish it in December. Finally, this is when your potential customers are most likely to be. Ability to find that information.

Start optimizing existing relevant pages before the peak(s)

Let’s say you already have a “rainy season preparation guide” or maybe even an e-commerce site that sells umbrellas. Start prioritizing such page optimization a few months before the peak occurs (i.e. 2-3 months before December, if you’re in Australia).

For example, you can start a link building campaign in October, leading to a ranking boost during peak search times.

2. Find trending topics to cover on Google trends

An extensive grasp of current events will help you retain your readers, engaging them more with articles with content people are interested in. They will also start to depend on you. It’s great, right!

To find trending topics, use the Search Trends tool on Google Trends.

Using Trending Searches, you can find search queries that have skyrocketed in popularity over the last 24 hours (in any given location).

Why do you need to do this?

Let’s say you run a blog about famous people.

You check Trending Searches on March 4, 2018, and see this:

Trending Search results

The Oscars are trending!

But doesn’t the fact that this topic is trending mean you’re too late?

Below is a chart of search trends for the term “Oscars” over the seven days from March 2 to March 9:

Search trends “Oscar.”

You can see that March 4 – the day the topic is trending on Google Trends – is not a peak day; March 5 is the peak. It then stopped working on March 6.

So even though the chance here may be slight, you can see that there is still a chance.

However, this is not always the case.

Sometimes Google Trends highlights a trending topic on the day it peaked.

“Mother’s Day” wasn’t a trending search until March 11

But since March 11 is Mother’s Day (at least in the UK), searches immediately drop the next day.

Trending Phrases “Mother’s Day”

In this case, unless you have prepared content related to Mother’s Day in advance, you are already too late.

But how do you know if a trending term has peaked?

Well, if it’s a term that is likely to spike at the same time every year, look at when the peak occurred last year.

Example: Mother’s Day fell on March 23, 2017. Again, this is when the peak happens.

Mother’s Day falls at the peak time of occurrence.

By looking at this historical data, you can predict whether interest in a trending topic is likely to increase or decrease.

So try offering a contrarian view on a topic that you know most of your competitors will share.

Your unique and fresh spin will attract more audience attention and earn their clicks.

3. Make sure popularity won’t skew the search volume of the keyword

If you’re trying to define a good topic for your next piece of content, don’t write a word until you’ve checked the subject with Google Trends.

Simply because you don’t want to waste time creating content for inappropriate topics.

Example: According to Ahrefs’ Keyword Explorer, the term “fidget spinner” has an average monthly search volume of 900K+.

But the term “yoyo” only averages 47,000 searches per month.8

Average Monthly Search Volume

Keyword Difficulty (KD) for both of these keywords is similar; creating content around the term “fidget spinner” makes much more sense, right?

Here is a comparison of both terms in Google Trend.

Trang web tổng hợp, gogle trend

Comparison of both terms in Google Trend

You can see that the popularity of “fidget spinner” spiked in May 2017.

But since then, the interest has dwindled to a mass, now almost nothing.

On the other hand, interest in yoyos (I love yoyos) remains steady.

If you look closely, you will see that “yoyo” is now a more popular term than “fidget spinner”.

Besides, you can analyze your competitor’s website to know what keywords they are trying to optimize and then find out if that keyword can become a new trend or not; if so, let’s go. Try to optimize SEO to catch up or even outpace your competitors.

4. Google trends help gauge demand for products or services in specific regions

Your product or service may not be of interest to everyone.

But if you can target the right customers, your business’s time and resources will be used more efficiently.

Example: A store that sells jackets wants to promote effective business. Then what they need is to determine the right customer needs when is the peak. Therefore, monitoring and checking the popularity of the keyword “Winter coats” by region and time will help them identify when to promote and whom they are targeting.

And after finding the locations where the keyword is most popular, you can run Google Adwords campaigns. From specific campaigns, you can optimize the keywords in the content to each audience in times of high demand.

5. Identify the cause of the drop in organic traffic

Sometimes, if one of your blog posts suffers from a decline in organic traffic, it’s not always the fault of your content.

The keywords it ranks for can lose audience popularity.

To pinpoint exactly what’s causing your Organic Traffic to drop, Google Trends can paint a clear picture for you.

By using the top keywords, your post ranks for in Google Trends – Google trends and checking its popularity trends over time, you will know if you need to update your post whether your audience has lost interest in keywords.

For example, if your post’s top keywords are popular and your popularity is stable or increasing, you need to update your post. Write your own with newer and more comprehensive information.

If keyword popularity drops, your audience will lose interest in the overarching topic.

In that case, there is little you can do to increase your Organic Traffic.

6. Find the keywords “long-tail” (Long-Tail) on Google trends

With its related query feature, Google Trends is a keyword research tool and a tool to develop your entire content strategy.

After attaching keywords, Google Trends will display the top 20 trending related queries and the 25 most popular related queries.

You can then plug these related keywords into SEO software, like Ahrefs or SEMrush, to check keyword complexity, Search Volume, and find more related keywords.

Ultimately, this process will help you cover trending and popular topics, attracting much organic traffic.

7. Determine if a theme is better for a video

A keyword’s popularity is declining in web search, which doesn’t necessarily mean you need to remove it from your entire content.

A keyword that loses popularity on web search can become famous on YouTube search.

For example, if you look at the Google Trends chart for the Google keyword “Content Marketing”, you will see that the popularity of this keyword on Google search has decreased over the past year.

Google Trends - Tìm kiếm trên web

But if you plug this keyword into Google Trends Vietnam to search on YouTube, you will find that its popularity has increased over the past year.

Just looking at the Google Trends chart for web searches might make you think this keyword has lost popularity, but its popularity has only just shifted from Google search to YouTube.

In other words, this keyword is still a valuable topic online. You should do a series of videos about it, instead of writing articles on the subject.
